CORE Kidney: It's in Your Hands-IT TAKES 2
The CORE Kidney Program, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Eli Lilly and Company unite to raise awareness about kidney disease with their dynamic float, “It’s In Your Hands: It Takes 2.” Inspired by the 1940s classic, this 2025 Rose Parade float highlights the importance of early testing and education for the 35 million Americans living with kidney disease—90% of whom are unaware of their condition due to its often silent progression.
The float will feature riders Dr. Anjay Rastogi M.D., PhD, Professor and Clinical Chief of Nephrology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Director of the CORE Kidney Program, alongside kidney donors, recipients, patients, and physicians, emphasizing the power of community and education in transforming kidney health. As a patient-driven organization, the CORE Kidney Foundation collaborates with Boehringer Ingelheim, and Eli Lilly and Company to advocate for awareness, transplants, and living donations. Together, they aim to spotlight the life-saving importance of kidney health for those most at risk.

CORE Kidney was honored to win the prestigious 2024 Isabella Coleman Award for Most Outstanding Presentation of Color and Color Harmony Through Floral Design for its entry “The Gift of Life: A Tune That Never Fades.”

Symbolism of Our Float:

Hummingbird: There is a hummingbird at the front pulling the float. In native cultures, humming birds are seen as spiritual guides who bring healing to the suffering.
Butterflies: There are two butterflies accompanying the hummingbird. Butterflies symbolize transformation and rebirth.
Tree: The tree represents knowledge and life — symbolizing the continued need for education and kidney health awareness. The canopy also resembles a kidney with life flowing through the trunk.
Green ribbon: A symbol of KIDNEY HEALTH — a call back to the Green Ribbon Campaign started at UCLA Health in 2016 to raise awareness for kidney health.
Sunflowers: There are two Sunflowers at the back of the float and they symbolize Optimism, Strength and Resilience.
Roses: Red roses symbolize kidney donors and Green roses symbolize kidney recipients.

Outreach Impact
The Rose Parade is celebrating 135 years of the parade in Pasadena California. It is one of the most widely broadcast programs across the nation and internationally on T.V., live streaming and social media platforms. An estimated 400,000-700,000 spectators watch the parade live.

At the start of the new year, CORE Kidney will spotlight kidney health awareness like never before by honoring living kidney donors and spreading awareness for kidney health screening.
